  • Should You Switch to a Metal Roof, or Stick With Shingles?

    Roof Materials

Every fall somebody asks me the same thing: should I just switch to metal instead of putting on more shingles? Fair question. Honest answer: it depends.

A quality architectural shingle roof lasts 20-30 years, costs a fraction of standing-seam metal, and is easier and cheaper to repair after a storm — which matters when you’re filing an insurance claim, since adjusters are set up to scope shingle damage, not metal panels. Metal can run 40-70 years and shrugs off hail and wind better, but you’re paying two to three times more upfront.

If you’re building new or staying put for decades, metal’s worth a real look. Replacing storm damage on an existing home, shingles are almost always the smarter call — just make sure whoever quotes you backs it up with real warranty and material specs, not a sales pitch.
