That old satellite dish bolted to your roof probably hasn’t worked in years, but the mounting brackets are still up there doing damage every single day. Every screw and bracket foot is a hole punched through your shingles, and most were sealed with nothing more than a dab of roofing cement decades ago.
Cement sealant dries out, shrinks, and cracks long before the shingles around it wear out. That’s why abandoned dish and antenna mounts are one of the sneakier sources of slow leaks we find on inspections. If water stains have shown up near an old mount, don’t just caulk over it and call it fixed.
On every roof we touch, we treat those spots the same way we treat valleys: proper flashing and ice and water shield extending well past the hole, not a bead of caulk and a prayer.
