Most homeowners think a “lifetime warranty” means the roof is covered no matter what. It’s not that simple — there are two separate warranties on every roof job: the manufacturer’s warranty on the shingles themselves, and the workmanship warranty on the labor that installed them. A crew can use great shingles and still cause a leak through bad flashing work or a sloppy nail pattern. That’s a labor problem, and the shingle manufacturer won’t touch it.
Here’s the part a lot of contractors won’t explain: to unlock a manufacturer’s best extended warranty, it’s not enough to just use their shingle. You need the shingle plus matching components — starter strip, hip and ridge, underlayment, ventilation — all from that same product line, installed to spec. Cut corners on the pieces underneath and you can still end up with a warranty, just not the good one.
