  • Going Solar? Here’s What It Means for Your Roof Warranty

    Solar & Roofing

Solar is everywhere in Georgia right now, and I get asked about it a lot. Here’s what a lot of installers won’t lead with: putting panels on a roof that isn’t ready for them can quietly void your shingle manufacturer’s warranty. Most roofing warranties exclude damage from penetrations and attachments added after the roof goes on, and solar racking is exactly that.

Before anyone drills a single rail into your roof, ask two questions: who is actually warrantying those penetrations, and how old is the roof underneath. If your shingles are already past the halfway point of their expected life, it almost always makes more sense to replace the roof first and build solar on top of a fresh one, instead of drilling into aging shingles and fighting a claim later.

Get an honest roof inspection before you sign a solar contract, not after.
