  • Should You Hire a Public Adjuster for Your Roof Claim?

    Insurance Tips

I get asked about public adjusters a lot, especially after a rough storm season. Quick breakdown: the adjuster your insurance company sends out works for the insurance company, not you. A public adjuster is someone you hire yourself to fight for your payout, and they take a cut, usually 10 to 20 percent of whatever gets paid.

For a huge, complicated loss, like a tree through the roof plus interior water damage, a public adjuster can earn their fee. But for a straightforward wind or hail roof claim, a roofer who knows how to document damage and sit across from the adjuster can often get you to a fair number without you handing over a slice of your check.

Before you sign anything with a public adjuster, ask what they’re adding that your roofing contractor isn’t already doing for free.
