  • What Georgia’s First Cold Snap Does to an Aging Roof

    Maintenance

Once that first real cold front comes through, asphalt shingles stiffen up fast, and stiff shingles crack instead of flexing with the wind. If your roof’s already a little worn, this is usually when it starts to show.

Walk your yard after a cold, windy morning and check your gutters for small shingle granules or chips. That’s not normal wear, that’s shingles losing their grip in the cold. Attics matter here too: poor ventilation lets warm air meet cold air right under the deck, and the condensation that forms can look exactly like a leak even when it isn’t one.

If your roof is pushing 15-20 years, now is the time to get eyes on it, before the next hard freeze turns a small brittle spot into a real leak.
